Save the planet AND save on space? Yes please! We all want to make better buying choices for our family, home, and planet. But it can be difficult to put down the money for eco-friendly bathroom products you just aren’t sure about. I get it, it’s safer to reach for what we know. Especially when there is money on the line. So I’m doing the work for you and sharing what I find.
Read on for 5 eco-friendly bath products our family switched to. (None of these are sponsored BTW – just sharing my unbiased opinions!)
Recycled Toilet Paper
We’ve been using Who Gives a Crap toilet paper for over a year now and it is by far the best eco-friendly TP I’ve tried. Often recycled or bamboo options can be a bit rough or thin, but this is neither. It is definitely sensitive tushy approved and there is zero plastic packaging. In fact, the rolls are packaged with the most cheerful paper designs! Since it’s a subscription service you can manage the backstock more effectively too. During the great TP shortage of 2020 we weren’t stressing it.
As an added bonus, Who Gives Crap donates 50% of profits to build toilets and install proper sanitation in underserved regions worldwide.
Reusable Makeup Remover Pad
Makeup wipes are super convenient and super wasteful. I’ve replaced them with Face Halo reusable makeup remover pads and have been very impressed. You simply get the pad wet and wipe your face clean and throw them in the wash periodically. In between washes I use Dr. Bronner’s castille soap to rinse them out and they seriously look good as new. I love using them on my kids too when they’ve had a bit of fun with makeup.
Hand Soap Tablets
How many times are you washing hands these days? Probably a lot. Which means a lot of plastic soap bottles are making their way to the landfills. We’ve been using Blueland for several months and I’m super impressed with several of their products, but especially the hand soap!
First you’ll need to purchase a hand soap starter kit which includes a glass soap dispenser and 3 hand soap tablets. Just fill the bottle with warm water, drop in a tablet, and wait for it to dissolve. Voila, instant foaming hand soap! The tablets take up so much less room than extra bottles of soap and no plastic. Just purchase refill tablets as you need them and you’re good to go. (For those with a sensitive nose I have found the fragrance to be very mild.)
Toothpaste Tablets
Have you heard of toothpaste tablets? It looks a mint that you bite into and then start brushing. No plastic tube required and no worries about exploding toothpaste in your luggage. I use the Chewtab Tablets Gentle Whitening in Peppermint.
Reusable Ear Swab
I was intrigued by the idea of a reusable ear swab so went ahead and purchased a LastSwab to give it a try. After use run it under water with some soap to clean and store in the bio-based case between uses.
Interested in more eco-friendly bathroom products?
- Tissue. I’ve tried several sustainable facial tissue brands and like the 365 Everyday Value brand from Whole Foods the best – it’s soft enough for everyday use.
- Reusable Cotton Rounds. The same brand that makes LastSwab also has a reusable cotton round that I am wanting to try. Like the Face Halo, they can be tossed in the wash to reuse.
- Menstrual Products. I eliminated pads and liners with the use of Thinx period underwear. The concept sounds a bit gross but they are seriously better than pads, especially for a heavy bleeder like myself. While I haven’t personally tried them, I have also heard great things about menstrual cups as well.
For all of the other items used in the bathroom be sure to check out Nordstrom’s recycling program. Drop off your hard-to-recycle empty hair and skin care bottles and cosmetics. Find more information about the program on the Nordstrom website.
