I was working from home way before it was quaran-cool. About six years ago I gave up my office to work at home full-time and it was probably the BEST decision of my grown up working life. No commute, no makeup, no pants with a waist (no shower til noon if we’re being honest), and breaks to throw in laundry, avoid eating out every dang day, and did I mention no commute? I literally wake up 5 minutes before my day starts. Otherwise there would be no way in Hades I could get to work by 6 am, looking respectable, and functioning as an adult with a brain. So I feel somewhat qualified to give advice on home office organization.

1. Office Space
Your workspace does not have to be large to have an organized home office. A stylish, simple desk and chair would work in a bedroom, living space, or dedicated home office. Pro Tip: Try a wall-mounted light to free up valuable desk space.
2. File Storage
When it comes to paper storage less is usually best. Before filing anything away, make sure to ask yourself if it’s necessary to keep and cannot be located online. This slim file cabinet provides space for essential files and extra drawers for storing small office supplies and current work files. (Try some decorative file folders to make paper work a little less dreadful)
3. Under Desk Storage
If you need additional floor storage use something like this seagrass and cotton basket to keep it neat and tidy. Use it for items like large rolls of paper, travel bags, or even trash – just because it’s trash doesn’t mean it has to look like it!
4. Drawer Organization
Drawers get messy the instant you open or close them. To win that battle be sure to only store things you need frequently and use drawer organizers to keep everything in its rightful place. When its easy to find you save time and avoid rebuying something you already have (but can’t find). To get the perfect fit take your drawer measurements and list of items you need to organize (pens, paperclips, tape, etc.) to The Container Store where they have pull out drawer organizer planners. It’s like a big board with a measured grid where you can play Tetris with the different types of drawer organizers until you find the perfect layout. Fun right? I like these drawer organizers for the office for a fun pop of color.
5. Secondary Storage
Store lesser used items, backstock, and general office supplies in secondary storage to keep your desk area clutter free. For smaller office setups go vertical with wall shelves or utilize free standing shelving or a credenza in larger spaces. To keep your shelves looking styled, clean, and organized use complementary storage solutions. I like to mix textures and colors for more interest like the gray storage boxes and some white woven bins.
