Are you on a mission to minimize and organize? Start in a small but highly used space – the bathroom. I don’t know about you, but digging through product does not sound like the best way to start (or end) the day. So let’s work through how to organize bathrooms by minimizing where possible and storing more efficiently what is left!
Sort
First up – sorting! Every minimizing session should start with a sort. Place like items together to SEE how much there really is. You might not realize you have five tweezers. But by putting them all together it’s easier recognize what’s needed and what’s not. Often we buy things multiple times because we just can’t find it! Getting organized will help eliminate this problem.
Purge
Once everything is grouped, it’s time to purge. Get rid of the duplicates, expired items, and things you don’t use anymore. I know it can be painful to part with an expensive hair product that’s barely been touched. But you’re not getting any of that money back by hanging on to something you don’t use. It’s just wasted space!
Separate
After you’ve sorted and purged, the next step is to separate frequently used products from backstock, seasonal, or special occasion items. The goal is to have easy access to a small set of daily items. If your daily routine changes with the seasons then keep the current season out and store the off-season separately.
Store
The last step is to implement storage systems. Start with the items you use regularly in order to maximize space and streamline routines. I recommend keeping these items in drawers (if you have them) or in a caddy that sits under the sink. Once you have these items stored, move on to special occasion, seasonal, and backstock. These items should be stored under the daily caddy, in a closet, or elsewhere if space is super tight. Create “kits” to group like items for easy grab and go, like nails, travel, spa, etc. Below are some of my favorite organizers for the bathroom. (Tip: be sure to measure your space AND groups of items to select the best products to fit your space)
- Elfa Drawer Unit (use cabinet depth drawers to utilize the entire cabinet)
- Modular Drawers
- Stackable Bins
- These Shoe Boxes (and the tall version) are my inexpensive go-to for grouping and stacking anywhere in the house
- Caddy for daily use items (I like to divide mine by day & night)
- I started using these Drawer Organizers in my own bathroom and like them so much more than others that are specifically marketed for drawers (I find they slide around much less and appreciate the slightly taller sizing)
