Happy National Give Something Away day! July 15th is recognized to encourage generosity in all of its forms. So in the spirit of giving let’s celebrate with a few ideas to show your generous heart while keeping your distance (because COVID ya’ll).
1. Give Food
Paying for the next in line’s coffee is always a generous move, but if you want to think bigger try giving to a local food pantry. Food pantries are always in need, especially during the current time of uncertainty and financial struggle. Go through your own pantry or double up on some items during a grocery run and drop them off for an instant impact.
2. Create & Share
With the kids home there is an endless supply of doodles, drawings, and artwork. Find a few of the best or commission the kids to create something new and send them to friends and family to brighten their day. For a more special touch have the kids write a note letting them know how much they are missed.
3. School Supplies
A new school year is coming (hopefully). While it may not look like school in the past, supplies will always be needed. Gather a backpack of supplies and donate it to a local school district or organization to be distributed to kids in need.
4. Pet Supplies
Animal shelters love donations! Shelters often post their needs online and include a variety of things like blankets, toys, and cleaning supplies. Most even have an Amazon wishlist that you can purchase from and have shipped directly to the shelter.
5. Hygiene Products
Since we’re not traveling this year, consider donating extra unopened toiletries to homeless or women’s shelters. It’s a small (and often free) gesture that can make a big difference in someone else’s life.
6. Donate Books
Sort through your books and select a few gently used items to donate to a local library. They will often accept other items, like DVDs, as well.
7. Gift Flowers
If you have a beautiful summer garden growing now is the perfect time to gather a bouquet of flower, or produce, from your garden to gift to a neighbor.
8. Give Time
Volunteer your time to a friend, family, or charitable organization. Even though we are social distancing there are plenty of ways to help!
9. Photo Book
Have you been missing your family this year? Create a small photo book with images of what you’ve been up to and send it to a family member. There are lots of easy options to do it all from your phone.
10. Luggage
Again with the traveling (I know, I need a vacation too). Take this time at home to sort through your luggage. Donate extras to foster care and help eliminate trash bags to carry belongings.
I hope you find a way to make National Give Something Away Day special!
