This is not a typo.

We all know about cleaning up AFTER we’ve made a mess. But what about cleaning up BEFORE. You know, the mess that is wrapping up our lives once we leave this earth?

I recently shared in stories that I was reading The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning and so many of you had never heard of it. It’s a short read and very much to the point - declutter and decide what should be done with your belongings before others are left to do it for you.

While it seems a bit morose it really doesn’t have to be! It’s revisiting your things and remembering their meaning and personal worth. If there is none? Let it go!

Looking at your belongings from the perspective of after you’re gone might just be the mind shift you need to declutter and organize.

Do you have a file system in place?

In reality, most people need to keep very few physical documents. Rule of thumb - if it can be found online, keep it there (just be sure to remember your login!). Here’s a quick cheat sheet for how long you should keep things:

1 mo or less - Bank slips, bills, receipts

1 yr - Bank statements, pay stubs, medical records, mortgage statements (think tax support)

3-7 yrs - Tax returns, house sale/purchase, satisfied loan records

Indefinitely - Birth / adoption / death / marriage /divorce certificates

It’s always good to give everything an annual review as well. Have you looked through your files lately? Consider this your yearly reminder!
